1.1 Representation Agreements

Many movement attorneys we’ve worked with over the years have stressed the importance of having clear, detailed representation agreements in place as soon as the attorney-client relationship is established. An example is provided on our website.1 This practice is by no means unique to representing radical defendants, and instructions on how to construct agreements is beyond the scope of this book. Throughout this book, however, we recommend elements that have been considered in representation agreements with radicals or that have been suggested by lawyers who we’ve worked with over the years. We hope they will help both you and your radical client work together more effectively.
